The Weird Tale by S.T. Joshi Trade Paperback Edition H.P. Lovecraft M.R. James
This is the Soft Cover edition of THE WEIRD TALE: ARTHUR MACHEN, LORD DUNSAY, ALGERNON BLACKWOOD, M.R. JAMES, AMBROSE BIERDE, H.P. LOVECRAFT by S.T. Joshi. SYNOPSIS: Tales of horror, the supernatural, fantasy and quasi-science fiction - all of these can be designated by the term "weird tale." In this penetrating study of six masters of the craft, Joshi explores the characteristic features of the tale. He finds that the weird tale is not principally a genre, but is rather the expression of a distinctive world view that compels readers to rethink their assumptions of what is "real" and "normal." Joshi explores a wealth of background material for each author to explain how his entire work and thought constitutes a philosophical entity. This is the first significant critical study for most of these authors. Written without unnecessary jargon, the book will be as accessible to fans of the weird tale as to scholars. As Joshi concludes in his preface, "I have written this book principally because I enjoy most of these writers and wish others to enjoy them."
